This week’s WFMO X Music Savage Show “Song of the Week†spotlight is on the brilliantly minimalistic track, “Hair Slick Back,†from Washington D.C. musician Eva Moolchan, a.k.a. Sneaks. It’s off her upcoming sophomore album, It’s a Myth, out March 31st, on Merge Records.
“Hair Slick Back†evokes the seventies style of early British post-punk bands like Wire, Gang of Four, and The Raincoats to name just a few that paved the way. With restless lyrics and a quivering beat Mollchan sings, “Hair slick back cause I can’t relax/You think you got a lot to say/No/You think you need a bigger stage/You think I can’t control my rage/Let me see you bend your breaks.” The song is matter of fact–put up or shut up– a statement that perfectly aligns with the DIY punk rock attitude.
Having spent time as a member of various D.C. bands, Mollchan broke out on her own in 2016 with the release of her debut album, Gymnastics, and made a lasting impression in the area’s music scene. All of her songs clock in at under two minutes and she quickly sets the tone with stripped-down instrumentation to get the point across efficiently, leaving you wishing there was a minute or two more of music. That is how you make a striking album, no matter the genre.
