This week’s WFMO X Music Savage Show “Song of the Week” spotlight is on the brilliantly minimalistic track, “Hair Slick Back,” from Washington D.C. musician Eva Moolchan, a.k.a. Sneaks. It’s off her upcoming sophomore album, It’s a Myth, out March 31st, on Merge Records.

“Hair Slick Back” evokes the seventies style of early British post-punk bands like Wire, Gang of Four, and The Raincoats to name just a few that paved the way. With restless lyrics and a quivering beat Mollchan sings, “Hair slick back cause I can’t relax/You think you got a lot to say/No/You think you need a bigger stage/You think I can’t control my rage/Let me see you bend your breaks.” The song is matter of fact–put up or shut up– a statement that perfectly aligns with the DIY punk rock attitude.

Having spent time as a member of various D.C. bands, Mollchan broke out on her own in 2016 with the release of her debut album, Gymnastics, and made a lasting impression in the area’s music scene. All of her songs clock in at under two minutes and she quickly sets the tone with stripped-down instrumentation to get the point across efficiently, leaving you wishing there was a minute or two more of music. That is how you make a striking album, no matter the genre.
